It Takes a Village
The Backstory
When we moved into our home, it came with two rundown sheds. The larger one was full of trash including an old couch. The smaller one was still semi-functional, but it had two broken kiddie pools in one side. The middle section was decent, so we stored firewood and tiki torches there. However, the roof of this section caved in at some point this past summer, so it was no longer functional. We have wanted to get rid of the two sheds since we moved in, but it was a big project that we would definitely need help to do.
When we got into fostering, one of the pastors at our church told us that they wanted to arrange a service day at our home. We felt like tearing down the shed would be too big of a project to ask them to help with, but when we mentioned it, he was enthusiastic about trying to get a large enough group to help with the project.
The Day of
We ended up having around twenty people show up. The big shed was almost completely down by lunchtime, and the smaller one was in process. Again, we were blown away with people’s support of us. Joshua ran the demoliton project while I took care of the kids.
The Kiddos
We have two kiddos with us, so I planned to take them to the park in the morning and then possibly someplace else after lunch. However, the kids were so excited about all that was going on around the house that we ended up staying at the house.
Joshua’s nephew who is also elementary age has enjoyed playing with our kids, so the three of them had a lot of fun together. They really wanted to “break something,” so we let them pound on the small shed while the adults worked on the big shed. There was one minor injury that was fixed with some hugs, some ice, and some tv.
The kids were a bit wild with all the excitment of the day, so we had some behavior challenges to deal with. After lunch, we put on a movie, and the kids settled down bit. Once their movie was over, Joshua’s sister and I took the kids to the park.
By 3:30 everyone was gone and so were our two sheds. We rented a dumpster, which will be picked up later this week, and we will take the metal to a recycling facility next weekend.
We Even Made an Archeological Discovery
That’s right. We found dinosaur remains in the small shed, but I don’t think the Smithsonian will be interested in them.
We want to thank the many people who have been spportive of us on this journey. We could not do it without you.
P.S. The neighborhood cats were very confused this morning because we took away their hang out. I know our neighbors care for them, so I’m sure they’ll be ok.
